CREATIVES ALSO SUFFER BIPOLAR AND DEPRESSION
Ever witnessed an Artiste/Artist when they create? Or a writer when they write? It’s unbelievable the kind of sensitivity and zoning out they need to do to find their rhythm and when they do, nothing in the world matters. So sometimes you see some not caring much for their outward appearance, some, just go on avoiding any form of social interactions, etc a lot of people have described them as crazy and quite truthfully, they must be, they must be crazy enough to seek what doesn’t physically or imaginatively exist from deep within their soul, they have to create out of nothing/an empty canvas and give value to things….#NobeBeans
Case in point, The painter Vincent van Gogh famously cut off his own ear in a period of anguished depression. The writer Virginia Woolf walked into a river with her pockets full of stones declaring she could not live with ‘going mad again’. The composer Robert Schumann died in an insane asylum following multiple suicide attempts.
The magnificent works these and many other troubled artists bequeathed to us were obtained at a terrible price.
Since Plato, it has been argued that ‘madness’ is twinned with creative genius, that the agonies we now understand as depression and the turbulence we now recognize as mania are part of a Faustian bargain with inspiration…..Yups! There goes the double edge sword again!
I think 100 percent of creative people are going to experience existential depression, which is a result of their desire to find meaning in life through their work. The arts are more dangerous (than other occupations) because they require sensitivity to a large extent.
Calm down”, “Take a deep breath”, all of these aren’t to scare you but to make you more aware of why you feel the way you feel, and help you manage your Artistry and Mental health clinically and through self-mastery.
I said in my previous post, Learn to step away from your craft from time to time, Create as much as you want, but don’t let your feelings/sensitivity, Mood swings, swing you away.
It’s all good vibes & insha allah here o
