DEPRESSION IS NOT SADNESS
People think depression is SADNESS, crying a lot, dressing in black, being Fatigue, and all the other expression of a temporary emotion, but Depression is way deeper.
Although Sadness is depressing, it’s not by any means equal to depression. Sadness is momentary, it’s for a moment, Depression on the other hand is a persistent and debilitating state of gloom, it is a continuous state of hopelessness and worthlessness that cripples a person’s emotion and will to live.
I’m always in utter shock when I hear people use these words incorrectly, as a socially inclusive adjective, Pop-culture lingual, and just simply say words like “I am depressed right now”, in place of “I am sad” right now. You don’t look trendy when you use these words interchangeably, you look ignorant. How can you get back home from Lagos traffic & whahala and the next thing you say to a friend when you’re gisting is “Omo, I am Depressed o, this Lagos wan kill me” π€₯π€π What you are momentarily is Stressed, not depressed.
When you ignorantly continue to peddle this narrative, you attempt to water down the seriousness and groanings of the people living with Depression, all in the name of trying to sound “Cool.
Make no mistake, this is not how to Normalize mental health conversations, you’re just making it harder.
Pls use your words correctly and know the difference, my book DEEP EXPRESSION explained this even much better. Click the link in my bio to buy from any store/ anywhere in the world, and as many copies as you might need.
So, Think of Sadness like a Headache” (Temporary)and Depression-like “Cancer” (persistent state of gloom & helplessness), good thing is, they are all treatable. Nothing to be afraid of, but know your words and describe your emotions clearly
